Given that gold is somewhat finite, thievery has a very significant impact on how well geared your party is at any given time. Some quests can even be exploited twice for extra gain exp and you can also kill the same quest npcs at the end for extra exp. However the stat check will vary depending on the option picked. From my experience playing the base Persuasion check will be the same for all choices (in this example we can say it's 2). If you have enough persuasion and sometimes you have to pick the right choice then there is always at least 1 option that works. An NPC might have different thresholds for a certain persuasion check, for example you'll need a persuasion score of 3 to pass a strength persuasion, but only 2 to pass a finesse persuasion etc. Bartering is not enough discount. So if that is the one that has no persuasion whatsoever, I simply am forced to fight or miss some opportunities instead of approaching things differently. I mean thievery is better for stealing money but persuasion is inferior to barter in terms of prices and that was a discussion. There's a few places where you want persuasion (dog and cat fight, kemm execution, Djinn) but for the most part it's just something you switch to with the Mirror when you know you're about to need it. Some of the options are extremely high success cap so even that won't work. So with a persuasion score of 2 and a finesse of 12, your persuasion score is still just 2 unless you pick a finesse option against someone who has 11 finesse or lower, in which case it's 3.
